The bar at the Green Valley Grill at the O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro, NC. The hotel is a nicely-done update of an old hotel that was torn down in another part of town. The builders of the hotel, restaurant, and bar were trying to replicate a deceased landmark, and I think they've done it.

The video for Dylan's "Must be Santa" went viral, so I saw it. After the initial shock wore off, I actually like it. And it further supports my position that in his old age Dylan has become Leon Redbone.

That's a great song. It may puzzle some that a song about the King of Rock 'n' Roll would be given a traditional folk treatment. But in Britain in the mid 50s, Elvis was described as a folk singer when his first album was released.

From the Esquire list I found the The Bar at Tujague's to be an interesting joint (near Cafe du Monde) in NOLA. They still have the quaint old pissing trough at the bar for their drunken male patrons (don't know if any women have used it but in NOLA I would suppose so).

Another favorite place not on Esquire's list is Kingston Mines, a blues bar on North Halsted in Chicago. The bar covers three store fronts and when one band takes a break the audience moves into the next building/space where the next band fires up -- until 4 a.m. every night/morning. http://www.kingstonmines.com

And it's not just TV and the internet that's causing the problem. National papers are now printed by satellite transmission, so they're timely. I know many people who subscribe to the NY Times. The Times may be hurting, but it, in turn, is hurting the local papers.
